Makeup Part 3

Now your face is completely set up for the fun part. Some people do choose to put this part first so the eye makeup doesn’t mess up their face. I personally choose to have it as the last step because I don’t want to worry about ruining the eye makeup once I got it down. It’s much easier to fix base makeup than it is to fix eye makeup.

The hard thing about eye makeup mainly is not knowing where to start, or maybe because you don’t wear eye shadow often and no matter how good it is, it may look weird. Typically it always looks weird until you put on eyeliner and/ or mascara.

The key points with makeup:
-do not drag dark makeup all the way up to the eyebrow
-start with neutral colors until you are comfortable doing makeup
-look at YouTube videos to help you through the basic steps

I’m going to show you a couple of tricks that you can use while doing your makeup.

These are my notes from a class I took in beauty school that is amazingly easy to follow. I will be discussing two of these in depth, wide eyes and narrow eyes.

Follow this key

I will start with narrow eyes

You will want to put light colors on the outside to make them look larger, putting a somewhat darker color on the inside diminishes the look of the eyes being to close. Get an even darker color to put in the middle and blend in. Leave just a small amount open near the eye brow to put a very light color to blend in with the rest. Do not put on thick eyeliner; make sure to make the liner thinner as you get closer to the outside edge. The purpose is to make the outer edge look brighter and bigger which will make the eyes look less narrow.

Wide eyes

Now I messed up on my notes here so it’s best to follow my written directions. You basically want to do the exact opposite than the narrow eyes, put the light color on the inside, medium in the middle and dark color on the outside. Then blend the dark color in towards the inner eye. Keep a small spot just below the eyebrow to place a light color down and blend in with the rest of the colors. A nice winged eyeliner is perfect for wide eyes because you want it dark on the outside. Do not put any eyeliner on the inside of your eye, and there you have it!

Bonus tip: for a winged eyeliner you will want to grab a stick, whether that is another makeup brush or a popsicle stick, really anything straight. Put one end at the side of your nose and the other side at the edge of your eye and leave about an inch that is going past the eye…similar to the photo below. Then use the line to apply a perfect eyeliner wing.

Makeup Part 2

If you haven’t read part one yet then please read part one before continuing.

Once you have done everything in part one then we can continue with these finishing steps. When you use any liquid or crème, you really want to put powder over it to lock it in. At this point you have put on your base makeup and set it I with powder and have also done contouring. You will not want to put the same color powder over your contouring. I continue putting a darker powder than my face color over the shaded areas and I put the same, or lighter, color of powder over the highlighted areas. This continues the dramatic effect and avoids covering up your contouring work.

Now you don’t need the blush, however I am a huge fan of the blush part. Don’t have it too bright, in fact this is another great chance to go to Sephora and let the girls doll you up. Keep in mind, these women are not professionals so don’t be afraid to say that you don’t like what they are doing. Once you find a color pull a fishy face and apply it along your cheek bone. Now this can be a little difficult to explain without being able to show it to you, so I found the following photos to help.

The first one shows you the best way to apply it based on your face shape. I found the photo here.

The second picture is how I personally prefer to put on my blush. Putting the blush up near the side of your eyes really makes them pop. I found the photo here.

This last photo is a bonus photo. It works best on ladies 40 and older. I still do it sometimes but it won’t make much of a difference yet. Putting the blush in the area circled makes it look as though you have had a face lift. It’s a huge difference. I found this photo in my phone, so please excuse the silly editing.

Makeup Part 1

For awhile now I have been talking about getting into makeup as well. I believe I have shared enough on hair to be able to start expanding to makeup.

A huge part of makeup is knowing your face shape. I personally have a difficult time deciphering face shapes. Sometimes a face can have a bit of two different face shapes. In the end, you know your face best and go with your gut. If you still have no idea, then ask a friend.

Once you know your face shape then it’s time to get started. Find a good base makeup, the best way to find your shade is to get your make-up done complimentary of Sephora. They will give you a good match and you can either buy it from them or you can grab your match from Sephora and buy it from Walgreens. I personally buy mine from Mary Kay because it’s a goof price and lasts longer than any other base makeup that I have tried. It’s also in a container that I can cut open towards the end and get every last drop. Other places like to put it into glass containers which can be wasteful.

Now to the contouring. This can be a little confusing, but it all comes down to making your face look more oval. Oval is currently the face to have. If that fails then simply resort to bringing out the features that you like and diminish the features you don’t like. Below is a photo that you can follow. The X’s are where you shade and the scribbled areas or the lines are where you lighten up.

Place lines in these areas and just lightly blend in until you get the desired look. I hope you found this helpful!

Hair Competitions

If you have ever been to a cosmetology competition, then you know that they can get a little crazy. The styles that are shown are not things that you would actually do on someone for a day out; they’re more of a reason to show you how crazy they can get and how far from the norm the can get their hairstyles to be. I personally participated in a hair show at Oliver Finley Academy of Cosmetology. It was a lot of fun, but also a little stressful being forced to find inspiration with something you’re not all that comfortable with. It was so long ago that I can’t even remember where or how I found my inspiration. I decided to make the hair and manikin look like a sunflower. I got some wire from Wal-Mart to braid the hair around it so that it would stick straight up. I placed a flower at the end of the braids to make it look as though flowers were coming out of the hair. I teased the majority of the remaining hair t make it look like the middle of a sunflower. The bits of hair surrounding the head I had already pre-cut and pre-bleached to make them look like pedals. I used the wrong product to smooth it out and stick up so it didn’t turn out perfectly. I still thought I had a chance though. Well, why don’t you take a look and decide for yourself if I had a chance or not.
Unfortunately I got like 4th or 5th place, just barely too low. I was unable to go to Florida and see my first hair show. I decided to look at the winners and see what I missed out on. The first prize was great and made me feel better about losing. The second prize however disappointed me. It was beautiful and very unique but it failed to meet the requirements. The requirement was that 80% of the final look should be the hair and the remaining could be any added pieces. His was 95% added pieces and the hair was simply placed in a pony tail. I only wish I was brave enough then to stand up for myself and call them out on that issue, but I was shy and said nothing. Although I have to give a shout out to my friend who stood up and said that I should have won while they were announcing the winners. He will never know how much that meant to me. I also have to give a shout out to my manager who brought me to my first hair show it St. Louis. All I want you to know it that it is better to say something than to not say anything at all. I hope that you are all braver than I was.

Myths about Hairstylists

There are many things that people claim that stylists love their clients doing; when in reality, stylists hate it.

Many people have their hair styled for prom or their wedding r whatever big events that happen in their lifetime. The number one thing I have to deal with is people coming in with unwashed hair, it’s both annoyed and pretty gross. They say that the dirtiness helps. Where that is true, I would prefer to dirty it up with my nice smelling products rather than your stinky grease hair that leaves me running to the bathroom to wash my hands but still can’t the smell out of them. Luckily if it’s not on site and in the salon I can simply wash it out.

Another thing people do is stay quiet. They don’t want to offend the stylist so instead they go home hating their hair. There are many beautiful styles out there, you don’t have to love all of them, but you do have to go home loving your hair, otherwise your stylist is left wondering why she never gets to see you again. We want to get to know you and your preferred style; so please, speak up.

The last myth about stylists is that we just tell you lies to spend more money. We actually care about your hair and want it to get better, besides haven’t you ever hear that it is cheaper to keep a client than to get a new one. Why would we do stuff to your hair that won’t help? You would not come back and we would be broke. It’s in both of our best favors to tell you the truth.

On a side note I just read the worst blog in the world called the 15 Ridiculous Hair Myths You Need to Stop Believing. I couldn’t get past the first myth it was ridiculous! She stated that trimming your hair won’t help since it grows from the root and not the ends. PLEASE do your research before posting things for the entire world to see! Yes it obviously grows from the roots and not the ends, but if you don’t stop those split ends from splitting then they will go all the way up and never stop. All that beautiful hair that you’re growing will just keep slitting at the length of your hair if not shorter. If you don’t stop those split ends then they won’t stop splitting all the way up the hair shaft. I tried reading further but most myths were obvious and then I got to number four...and I’m done. The lesson is to do your research first. Don’t take a bloggers word until you have double checked the information yourself, or talk to your stylist, they went to school and got a license, they certainly know what they’re talking about. Here are some better ways to keep your hair healthy.

From the Interview to the Job

If you’re anything like me then you get bored with having the same hairstyle and you like to change it up but you may not be entirely sure what is work or interview appropriate. Let me start with something that is pretty straight forward, unless your hair lays naturally all day everyday then style it in some way or another. If your hair is curly then help it out with some products and curling any limp sections. If your hair is stick straight then it still creates kinks around your shoulders and you end up looking like a three year old who wouldn’t let their mom style their hair. Get some product and at least straighten out the hair and lightly hairspray it in place.

In interviews, please keep your hair out of your face, it is a habit for most women to move it out of their faces each time it falls in front of their face. Keep it out of your face with a bobby pin, a very slight hair bump, half hair up-half hair down style, a bun, or a French twist, anything to keep your hair out of your face. The most important thing is to keep it simple. Do not poof it, back comb it, tease it, or whatever you want to call it, too much. You’re not going to prom so don’t make it look like you are.

Once you have the job you don’t need to worry about keeping it out of your face too much, but all of the other rules apply. Good luck with the new job!

What does your hair need?

I have had a lot of separate posts to help your hair with certain things but if you don't already know what your hair needs then you don't know which article to look at which doesn't make them helpful at all. Today I want to help guide you to the right post for you. I don't have all the solutions yet but I have covered some of the most popular hair problems.

If your hair basically looks like someone rubbed a balloon all over your head and there are just tons of (or some) baby hairs just sticking up all over the place then you want to read  Miss Frizz. It goes over ways to get rid of that awful frizz and the best products to help with that.

If your hair is weak and always breaking off whenever you do anything with it then you will want to read the Steps to Happier Healthier Hair. I use the products talked about in this blog and I take the vitamins, they really help! My hair has dramatically changed, its so soft and hardly ever tangles, not to mention the strength has improved dramatically. If you follow these steps on a regular basis then in time you will see amazing improvements. I have a similar post that requires a lot of the same steps but has a few that are different, its called 7 Tips for Growing Out Your Hair and of course it helps you to grow out your hair.

When your hair gets healthier though, it gets a lot harder to create your own volume so I also created a blog to help you get that bigger hair that you want, it's called Redken Quick Tease 15 that is actually the product to help with that. Another thing that can help with volume is Dry Shampoo. Dry Shampoo also helps with greasy hair.

Last but not least if you have difficulty curling your hair like I used to then my blog, Stubborn Curls, is perfect or you.

I am her to help you if you have any questions so please Contact me if you have any questions!
